Significados literales Literal es un adjetivo empleado para referirse a aquella interpretación que se hace de un texto y que es fiel o se apega al sentido original de las palabras plasmadas en él. Como tal, proviene del latín litterālis, es decir, lo relativo a la letra, y no debe confundirse con literario. En este sentido, lo literal es aquello que respeta fielmente el sentido propio de las palabras, y por ello se contrapone con el sentido figurado o lato, es decir, aquel que se atribuye o se deduce de las palabras, dependiendo del contexto o de la intención con que se hayan empleado. De allí que lo literal haga referencia a un tipo de lenguaje que se opone al figurativo, es decir, aquel metafórico o poético que se vale de figuras literarias para expresar ideas. En el ámbito de la traducción, se denomina literal a aquella traducción que ha respetado al máximo las palabras y la estructura sintáctica del texto original, y que las ha vertido a otra lengua conservando, con la mayor fidelidad posible, su sentido primordial. Literal meanings Literal is an adjective used to refer to that interpretation that is made of a text and that is faithful or adheres to the original meaning of the words embodied in it. As such, it comes from the Latin litterālis, that is, relative to the letter, and should not be confused with literary.  In this sense, the literal is that which faithfully respects the proper meaning of the words, and therefore contrasts with the figurative or broad sense, that is, that which is attributed or deduced from the words, depending on the context or the intention with which they were used. Hence, the literal refers to a type of language that is opposed to the figurative, that is, that metaphorical or poetic that uses literary figures to express ideas.  In the field of translation, literal is a translation that has respected the words and the syntactic structure of the original text as much as possible, and that has translated them into another language while preserving, as accurately as possible, their primary meaning.
